MINNEAPOLIS, April 25, 2024 — A newly published, peer-reviewed study in the Occupational Therapy Journal of Research shows the effectiveness of The Zones of Regulation® curriculum when used in a therapeutic setting with autistic youth.
The study found that incorporating The Zones into therapeutic sessions led to statistically significant improvements in emotional and behavioral outcomes. Key results included:
- Reductions in irritability, hyperactivity, and emotional reactivity
- Caregiver-reported gains in emotional and behavioral self-regulation
- High ratings from therapists and caregivers for both ease of use and overall effectiveness
“These findings reinforce what we’ve heard from educators and clinicians for years,” said Leah Kuypers, Creator of The Zones of Regulation. “When we provide tools that are accessible and adaptable, we give individuals—especially neurodivergent learners—greater agency in navigating their emotions.”
As an occupational therapist and educator, Kuypers developed The Zones of Regulation to bridge brain science with real-world tools. This study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the use of The Zones framework in both clinical and educational settings. It underscores the program’s value in helping neurodiverse individuals build critical self-regulation skills.
