ASCA 2025 Takeaways: Navigating and Innovating SEL with Purpose

July 21st, 2025

We’ve just wrapped up an energizing week at the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) 2025 Conference in Long Beach, CA, and one thing is clear: school counselors are leading the charge in shaping the future of social-emotional learning.

Inspired by this year’s theme – Navigate and Innovate – we’re reflecting on the conversations, insights, and shared commitments that continue to shape our work at The Zones of Regulation.

Here are three powerful takeaways we walked away with:

1. Common Language Matters

Shared language and practices across Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), age groups, and learning environments supports students with much needed consistency and clarity. Common language builds inclusion, strengthens access, and helps learners feel comfortable and safe.

The Zones framework offers exactly that: Aa simple system for understanding, communicating, and caring for our feelings. It was so exciting to hear how The Zones of Regulation’s common language is impacting learning communities, from early childhood through high school!

2. Quality SEL Curriculum Isn’t Optional, and School Counselors Are Leading the Way

School counselors are more than just facilitators; they’re instructional leaders in social and emotional learning and focused on providing critical regulation supports in their buildings. Their voices are instrumental in guiding social-emotional learning (SEL) implementation with vision and fidelity. But for their efforts to be sustainable, SEL has to be more than a side initiative.

SEL must be grounded in research, backed by evidence, supported through training, and prioritized through sustainable funding.  When schools elevate counselors as leaders and equip them with quality tools like The Zones of Regulation Digital Curriculum, student well-being thrives.

3. Adult Co-Regulation is Foundational for Student Self-Regulation

A strong school climate begins with the adults who shape it. Developing and supporting adult social- emotional learning—among educators, staff, and leadership—is essential to building a safe, empathetic, and collaborative learning community.

When adults model emotional regulation, students benefit from more authentic relationships and an emotionally safe climate. ASCA attendees emphasized that investing in adult SEL isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. Zones Trainings offer valuable pathways to support adults throughout the learning community and our Digital Curriculum has all the resources you need to make regulation the norm, not the exception!

We left ASCA 2025 feeling renewed in our mission and grateful for the conversations that affirmed the work happening in schools across the U.S. Whether you’re just getting started with The Zones or deepening your SEL initiatives, we’re here to support your journey.

Let’s keep the momentum going!
