After more than a decade of supporting school and district teams in implementing The Zones of Regulation, one theme remains clear: a strong launch sets the foundation for lasting success. Use these essential steps to kick off your implementation of The Zones of Regulation Digital Curriculum with confidence and sustainability.
1. Identify Your Zones Champions
Designate 1-3 “Zones Champions” per school site, with optional district-level oversight. These leaders will:
- Develop and guide the implementation plan
- Model key practices (e.g., Zones Language, Check-Ins, Visuals)
- Cultivate staff buy-in
- Monitor fidelity and sustainability

2. Define Expectations and Schedule Instructional Time
We recommend dedicating a minimum of 40 minutes per week for direct instruction of The Zones Digital Curriculum. Set clear expectations for how often and in what format Zones Concepts (lessons) will be delivered across classrooms or grade levels.
3. Train Your Staff
Support staff with professional development through:
- A Zones Training (live stream or on-demand)
- Adult Learning Modules included within the Digital Curriculum
4. Prepare Technology
The Digital Curriculum works best with an interactive whiteboard or large touchscreen. If these aren’t available, use a large screen or projector so students can see and interact with the lessons together. For a small group setting, facilitators can share the Interactive Presentation on a tablet or laptop.
5. Use Data to Drive Implementation
Monitor your site’s implementation using the built-in Data Collection tools included within the Digital Curriculum.

6. Build a Zones Climate – Together
Over time, embed these essential climate elements across classrooms and common areas:
- Post visuals
- Offer regular Check-Ins
- Provide access to regulation tools
- Use consistent Zones Language
- Reinforce learning with opportunities for practice
7. Create Feedback Loops
Provide regular opportunities for staff to share feedback and raise questions with Zones leaders. Sustain implementation through ongoing coaching, team check-ins, collaborative problem-solving, and targeted support when needed.
8. Consult with Zones Experts
Consider scheduling Zones of Regulation consulting for your leadership team to review progress, address challenges, and plan next steps for a successful implementation.
9. Celebrate Success
Acknowledge and celebrate small wins to keep momentum strong. When you notice staff using Zones language, displaying Zones visuals, or testing out new Zones strategies, call it out—whether through a quick shout-out, email, or staff meeting highlight. These moments of recognition reinforce effort and boost long-term engagement.
