4. Print Products & Companion Tools – Clarifies differences and uses across formats
What’s the difference between the original book and the Digital Curriculum?
The original The Zones of Regulation print curriculum, released in 2011, introduced the framework to classrooms, therapy settings, and homes worldwide—equipping learners with tools to build emotional awareness and regulation skills. In 2024, the curriculum was fully reimagined as a Digital Curriculum: a dynamic, interactive platform designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s educators and learners.
While both offer a comprehensive, research-informed approach, the Digital Curriculum is not a replica—it’s an evolution. It delivers flexible, tech-integrated lessons with videos, interactive presentations, built-in educator supports, and a library of visuals to engage learners and streamline implementation. Designed for use across educational, clinical, and home settings, the digital version offers a richer, more adaptable experience aligned with how students learn today.
Most importantly, the new Zones Digital Curriculum incorporates the latest evidence-based best practices developed in tandem with feedback from The Zones community.

5. Implementation & Use in Schools – For educators and administrators
How do I scale The Zones across a school or district?
Scaling The Zones of Regulation across a school or district starts with a shared commitment to building a common language around emotional regulation. We recommend beginning with a Zones Training to ensure educators have a solid understanding of the framework. Many schools start with a pilot group, then expand implementation using an intentional rollout plan. Implementation is most effective when supported by school and/or district leadership, integrated into daily routines, and reinforced across settings. Our team offers training and consultation to support broader implementation across MTSS tiers.
Can The Zones be used as Tier 1 instruction?
Yes! The Zones of Regulation is designed to be delivered universally as Tier 1 instruction. It supports all students in developing self-awareness, regulation strategies, and social-emotional language. When embedded school-wide, The Zones helps establish a strong foundation for emotional regulation and positively impacts school climate. Many educators integrate Zones into morning meetings, advisory periods, and across academic subjects to promote generalization of skills.
Are there fidelity tools or progress monitoring resources?
Yes. The Zones of Regulation Digital Curriculum offers fidelity checklists, implementation guides, and tools to monitor progress. These resources help educators track student growth in regulation and social-emotional learning over time. Additionally, our Digital Curriculum includes built-in reflection opportunities, goal setting, and self-assessments to support data-driven decision-making. Schools and districts can also incorporate Zones-aligned goals into broader SEL or behavior frameworks.
6. Special Populations & Settings – Adapting the framework for specific needs
Is The Zones appropriate for teens or older students?
Yes—The Zones of Regulation framework is highly applicable for teens and older students and is used in middle schools, high schools, and transition settings around the world. While the foundational concepts stay the same, successful implementation with adolescents often involves adapting language, visuals, and examples to better reflect their lived experiences.
To support this, we offer a Specialized Training course focused on adolescents, which provides in-depth strategies and adaptations for this age group. We also offer Tools to Try: Cards for Tweens & Teens, a companion resource featuring developmentally appropriate, student-tested regulation strategies designed specifically for older learners.
How can I adapt Zones for neurodivergent learners?
The Zones was originally created with neurodivergent learners in mind, particularly those with autism and sensory regulation needs. Leah Kuypers, creator of The Zones, holds a Master of Education with a focus on teaching individuals with autism and a Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Her background shaped a framework rooted in accessibility, flexibility, and respect for diverse neurotypes.
The Zones Digital Curriculum has been refreshed to reflect direct feedback from the neurodivergent community, incorporating more inclusive visuals, flexible pacing, and strategies that support varied communication and processing styles. The Zones is inherently adaptable—educators, clinicians, and caregivers are encouraged to personalize instruction, use strength-based approaches, and co-create tools with learners to make the framework meaningful and effective.
Can Zones be used in clinical or therapeutic settings?
Yes—The Zones is used by clinicians across a wide range of settings, including independent practitioners, small clinics, multi-site practices, and hospital-based programs. Developed by Leah Kuypers, a licensed occupational therapist with deep experience supporting neurodivergent learners, The Zones was designed to translate clinical insights into practical, teachable tools for emotional and sensory regulation.
Occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, counselors, and psychologists regularly integrate The Zones into therapy to support goals related to regulation, executive functioning, and social-emotional learning. The Zones Digital Curriculum provides flexible, modular content that can be adapted for one-on-one, small-group, or family-based intervention—making it a valuable resource across therapeutic models and delivery formats.
